Cheesesteak Hot Dogs

All beef hot dogs topped with melted provolone, sauteed onions, peppers, and mushrooms, and piled into a thick toasty bun. Cheesesteak Hot Dogs are quick, easy, and qualify as awesome summer comfort food.

Cheesesteak Hot Dogs

This week I’m skipping straight to summer. Because I live in North Carolina and it’s warm and we have been eager to be in the yard with the trees and the flowers and the dogs and THE GRILL.

It’s true that we have pretty mild weather for most of the year and we definitely grill in the winter, but hot dogs are a summer food for me and I am getting a head start.

You should know that PART of the reason I was totally eager to get a head start is that I have 10 lbs of hot dogs in my freezer. The other part is that my boys are home for spring break.

I should maybe take a minute to explain the 10 pounds of hot dogs though, because I realize it sounds a little bit excessive. Or maybe everyone except me is already hip to overstocking the freezer when you find a great deal? I’m usually the last one to know everything.

Anyway.

So. If you know me at all you know that I have 2 growing sort of teenagery boys plus a significant other that has a very physical job and eats enough for two grown men. When we cook out it gets expensive. And then when you add to that the fact that I am super super super fickle about my meat purchases, our grilling habits can cost a small fortune.

But hot dogs are pretty cost effective. So much so that I can afford to but the GOOD hot dogs. Kosher. All beef. I only want a hot dog once in a blue moon, so when I finally go there I insist on doing it right.

Hot Dogs with Peppers and Onions

Let’s take just a minute to discuss something else to get excited about though — Philly Cheesesteak Hot Dogs. I know you guys love cheesesteak everything because of this Philly Steak and Grilled Cheese Sandwich and also this Cheesesteak Macaroni. So I sauteed some onions, bell peppers and mushrooms and piled them on top of these awesome all-beef hot dogs wrapped in provolone cheese. I stuffed all of it into these big fat buns called sausage rolls. If you can find them, get them! Good bread is important.

Serves: serves 4
Ingredients
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • ½ medium onion, thinly sliced
  • ½ green bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • ¼ red bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • ½ cup sliced mushrooms
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 All Beef hot dogs
  • 8 thin slices of provolone cheese (or 4 ounces of the cheese of your choice; cheddar would be great!)
  • 4 big hot dog buns, hoagie rolls, or sausage rolls.
Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 350F and line a baking sheet with foil.
  2. In a medium frying pan melt the butter and add the oil over medium heat. Add the onions, peppers, and mushrooms (See Note) to the pan and cook, stirring occasionally until the vegetables are tender, about 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and set aside.
  3. Grill the hot dogs to your liking! Hot Dogs come fully cooked so you can heat them however you like. I like mine nearly charred so the outsides are kind of crisp.
  4. Wrap each hot dog in 2 slices of the cheese (if you are using shredded cheese like cheddar just sprinkle it over the top). Top with the sauteed vegetables and place on the prepared baking sheet.
  5. Bake for about 5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted.
Notes
1. If you don't like mushrooms, leave them off! Same goes for bell peppers or onions. You can totally pull this recipe together with any combination of one veggie or all 3.
2. For completely delicious rolls you can rub the outsides with a little soft butter before putting them in the oven. Perfection!
